Papaya Tree

Papaya or pawpaw is the fruit of CARICA PAPAYA, and is a fast-growing, short-lived tree. Native to the Americas, it is a very heat tolerant addition to the landscape, but do not over water. Depending on the species, it can range 10-12 ft or larger. It needs warmth year round but can withstand a light frost. Freezing temps will kill it so it can be put in a container which can be moved, put in a controlled environment like a hot house or tented if its outside.

Historically all parts of this plant have been used for practical purposes. The fruit is yellow-amber when ripe and can be eaten raw. If it is still green, it should be cooked before consumption. The seeds can be substitued for pepper. Also this plant contains latex, so make sure you do your homework and find out the do's & don'ts of this plant. The deeply divided leaves are characterized by 5-9 segments and can be used for tea or eaten like spinach. The branches and trunk are used for making rope.

Even if you just want to look at it, it is a wonderful symmetrical tree with lime green coloring which makes a great contrast to any darker greens in your yard.
