Live Oak, or Quercus virginiana, is a beautiful majestic tree that can live hundreds of years. Live Oaks are highly sought after landscape trees and provide a great canopy of shade in our long hot Texas summers. The Live Oak is slow growing, it may take 15 years to reach its full height of 50 feet and a spread of 75 feet. The Live Oak is also good for our Southern coastal areas with their strong limbs for our strong winds.
The Live Oak is not particular about the soil it is planted in as long as it is well draining and not sandy. As with most shade trees, they need consistent careful watering the first couple of years to ensure good root development. Good root development leads to a prettier and healthier tree. The Live Oak thrives in the full sun, needs lots of water, and when planting give it a large space for its massive root system.
