The African Orchid tree, Bauhinia galpinii, is a sprawling shrub that is wider at 10' to 15' wide than it is tall at 6' to 10' tall. This shrub can be trained to a small tree and does its best when it is given plenty of room with full sun to partial shade. The African Orchid tree loses its grey/green lobed leaves in the spring as other plants are putting theirs on. By early summer, the tree is full of leaves. The African Orchid tree blooms repeatedly through the summer with beautiful coral red flowers. As a bonus, this tree attracts bees and butterflies.
