The heat is upon us already! Triple digits in June spells a long hot summer ahead. So how about a great plant that can stand up to the heat? The answer is the Esperanza shrub (Yellow Bells). Its bright yellow trumpet-like flowers are a great addition to add contrast to other colors in the garden like blues, reds and purples. It will brighten up a dull fence or a background of dark greenery.
Here are some highlights:
- Likes well-drained soil
- Attracts hummingbirds
- Originally from southern U.S., Mexico and South America
- Can also be used as a container plant
- Needs fertilizer 4-6 weeks during the peak blooming season
- Can be an average 4-5 ft or larger if frost free in winter
- If we get a freeze, it will come back from the ground
- Drought/heat tolerant
Just don't forget that any plant put in the ground right now will need WATER, WATER, WATER.
Have a great summer!
