Primrose (Primula)

Nothing is more English than a primrose, although these enchanting flowers are actually native to the Alps, the Himalayas and Tibet. Most of the hundreds of species, hardy to Zones 3 or 4 are dainty little flowers in playful color combinations. Buy plants in bloom so that you can verify their color. Shade-loving primroses are easy to grow, and their wants are simple. Give them a loose, rich humusy soil, ample water during the summer and reasonable shade, and they will flourish and multiply.

Insider's secret

To increase your primroses, divide every two or three years on a damp, cloudy day soon after they've stopped flowering. Lift plants, split them and loosen root ball. Replant single rosettes in shade; set them snugly at ground level with added organic material and water.
