Louisiana Iris

Louisiana iris is a terrific spring blooming perennial that can grow almost anywhere. Of course perennial means that it will come back year after year, and this iris is a very dependable perennial. Here are some things you need to know about Louisiana iris:

  • They will grow and bloom in full sun to part sun.

  • They will grow in very good soil but they will also do very well in a wet area.

  • Louisiana iris come in a broad range of colors - blues, purples, lavenders, reds, whites and yellows.

  • Their foliage reaches 24 - 30" and the graceful flower stems usually rise 6 - 12" above the foliage.

  • They are spring bloomers here in Houston, usually beginning to bloom in March and continue to bloom for 6 to 8 weeks. The leaves of the Louisiana iris start to disappear in the summer when they have finished blooming and are usually totally gone in the winter - but as soon as spring arrives you will find that they have multiplied as they put on their beautiful new foliage and lots of orchid-like blooms.

  • Louisiana iris look beautiful in an old-fashioned cottage garden as well as a formal garden - and they are great in a large pot with mixed annuals and perennials.
