Pennisetum (Fountain Grass, Swamp foxtail)

This genus consists of about 80 species of tuft-forming, rhizomatous or stoloniferous, annual or perennial grasses found in tropical, subtropical or warm-temperature regions around the world. The leaf blades are usually flat. They are mostly grown for their dense flower clusters of brush-like spikelets, which appear in summer and fall and are used in floral arrangements both fresh and dried.

They prefer rich soil in full sun and a moist environment. They are good choices for a coastal setting if protection from strong winds is provided. Propagation by seeds or division is recommended, but if growing one of the many named cultivars, propagate by division only as the seeds may not be true.
