Native to Southern Africa, these strong-growing perennials are popular for their fine foliage and showy flowers produced over summer. Some other names are Agapanthus africanus, Agapanthus "Blue Baby",Agapanthus praecox, Agapanthus campanulatus, Agapanthus inapertus, Agapanthus "Loch Hope", and Agapanthus "Peter Pan". Arching, strap-shaped leaves spring from short rhizomes with dense, fleshy roots. Flowers are various shades of blue in many flowering umbels, borne on a long erect stem, often up to 3 ft. or more tall. They are ideal for background plants or for edging along a wall, driveway, or fence.

Agapanthus praecox

Insider's secret

Agapanthus can thrive in conditions of neglect, on sites such as dry slopes and near the coast. They enjoy full sun but will tolerate shade and will thrive in just about any soil as long as they are watered in the spring and in the summer. The naturalize readily, soon forming large clumps.
