A glory of the late-summer season and an arresting accent in early fall, Joe-Pye weed is a roadside plant that deserves a place in more gardens. Hardy in Zones 3 to 9, it easily reaches 6 to 10 feet when given a sunny site in moist, fertile soil. With its sturdy stalks topped by large, domed clusters of smoky, light-purple flowers that last for almost a month, Joe-Pye weed is quite a sight!
Although compact (under 5 feet) and deeper purple forms of Joe-Pye weed are sometimes available, the more familiar tall version is your best bet for drama. Buy sees or plants from a reputable nursery; don't be tempted to collect them wild. Nursery plants, raised in rich soil, are the ones that will gain impressive height. Just remember to place eupatoriums at the back of the border or in an area by themselves so they won't hide other plants when they rise to their full height.
