Gardening Tools

The use of the right tools makes all the difference in the garden. We (addicted gardeners) all have our few favorite tools.

The essentials are as follows:

Pruning Shears - I found some at a garden show that would cut through almost anything with little effort

Small hand saw - Ideal for triming larger limbs and misc stakes

Hoe - Instead of the old, conventional hoe, go for a new oscillating or action hoe that cuts the weeds off at and below the surface on both forward and backward strokes

Shovels - round nose and a sharp shooter

Pick - for breaking up hard gumbo

Ladder - For reaching the higher limbs needing pruning

Garden Hose - Uh..why do I need this?

Lawn Rake (Leaf Rake) - Rake them, compost them!

Stiff-tined rake - for leveling new flower beds and can be used as a burglar alarm (my son showed me this one) when you leave it tines up in the back yard

Hand Trowel - great for those bulb holes, digging for those six-pack annuals, and misc digging. My favorite is a concrete trowel with the sharp point

Garden Cart - No more three wheel wheelbarrows. I bought a lightweight 4 wheeler that is well balanced and designed for even smaller people to push.

Gloves - Essential for working in the garden.......for wimps! Just kidding. Save you hands and invest in thick leather. Great to have when working in the old rose garden.

Tape Measure - A must for laying out new beds and spacing plants

Weed Eater - normally a lawn tool, I use mine to lay out new beds and to edge ALL my flower beds. Turn it side ways and go to town.
