Native to Japan and China, the Ardisia japonica is a low, evergreen shrub that spreads by underground rhizomes to create an attractive ground cover for shaded gardens in mild climates. The upright stems are only 8 - 12 inches tall, although the plant spreads widely. Small, white flowers are produced at the tips of the stem in fall; these are followed by red fruit that remains colorful in winter. It is good for shaded areas with steady moisture and slightly acidic, loamy soil. Zones 8 - 10
