After my first week of working at Maas Nursery, I was definitely feeling ignorant of the various flowers and plants available. I was wishing for just one customer that would utter a name I knew. Then someone asked about periwinkles (arrrgghh, don't know that one) and added "I think they are also known as vincas. Hooray! This one I actually have in my own yard.
These wonderful little beauties hold up quite well in the Texas summers! Considered an annual, under the right conditions their seeds will produce new plants after the winter is over. Even after 4 freezes this winter, I saw some new baby vincas coming up in my front flower beds.
The Madagascar Vinca is native to northwest Africa, southwest Asia and parts of Europe. Some of the colors are pink, purple, red, salmon and white. I figure anything that can survive in northwest Africa, can make it in Texas. They are very heat tolerant so if you have a totally exposed sun flower bed, these are great.
The newest, most popular vinca that Maas Nursery has available is the Nirvana Vinca, cascading or trailing. It is larger than the standard vinca and is disease resistant.
Cora Vinca is another new disease-resistant variety. These new varieties are very hardy here and will not melt in our summer rains & watering (due to fungus) like the old varieties.
