These petunias are not your mother's petunias - those rather wimpy ones that last for maybe a month. No, these are super duper WAVE PETUNIAS. I know you've been seeing them here for the last 5 or 6 years but if you haven't tried them yet, this fall might be a good time to start. Petunias generally have a much better season here when planted in the fall. Unfortunately, there aren't as many wave petunias available to us in the fall, but we'll see this year. We'll do our best to have the best selection we can for you. So, wave petunias planted in the fall will last and bloom all through the winter typically. If they get a little freeze damage just prune them - they put on lots of new growth and blooms in the spring and can last through the summer (maybe not this summer, but they usually do). Remember that annuals and perennials planted here in the fall with our usually mild winters will have a gigantic root system that makes for outstanding plants in the spring.
Wave petunias now come in lots of colors and growth habits. You'll see waves, shockwaves, tidal waves, easy waves, and double waves. They all do very well here especially with morning sun and afternoon shade or full sun in the cool months. But I have found the ones that last the longest in the heat are usually regular wave petunias and tidal waves - they are my favorites for durability. They have a tough root and branching system that becomes almost shrub-like. They all like to be pruned back a little every month or two if they get leggy and certainly monthly fertilizer - good organics of course. They are going to need plenty of water in the hot months - not as much in the winter. And remember that wave petunias like so many other annuals and perennials do not like wet foliage going into night.
Wave petunias in all series come in red, white, purple, pink, rose, and blue. They are perfect for garden beds, baskets, planters, and window boxes.
Purple wave and tidal wave silver are my two all-time best performing favorites. They are both very beautiful and very tough.
The wave series, including purple wave, produce a ground hugging carpet of color. They are the lowest growing in the wave series. The plants get 5" - 7" high and can get 36" - 48" across.
The tidal wave series, including tidal wave silver, is a larger growing series - they can reach a height of 16" to 22" and sprawl to a wonderful 30" - 60". The tidal waves can make a great groundcover as well as a huge planter. I know you've seen the big baskets of wave petunias we have here at the nursery at certain times of the year.
Well, we hope to have some wave petunias ready for you in September, but everything is a little off this year because of the heat and drought so call first before you come for them. And, as always, we thank you so much for your business!
