As one of the most popular bedding flowers, petunias have been written off in recent years as uninteresting and less appealing than more exotic-looking flowers. However, because of their durability and great color they are a mainstay for gardening with color. Additionally, new hybrid varieties available now warrant choosing this annual for your garden.
Petunias can be single and double blooms, ruffled or smooth petals, striped, veined
or solid colors, mounding and cascading habits and even some fragrance. They will usually bloom throughout the summer accept in extreme heat. In Houston, they grow best in the fall because they prefer cooler weather. Some varieties require frequent pruning to set new flower buds. Water them regularly but make sure the roots aren't sitting in water.
