Anemone

Sometimes called windflowers (anemos is the Greek word for wind), anemones are tuberous-rooted perennials that produce delicate, daisy-like blossoms. Depending on the species, flowers bloom in spring or fall and include a wide range of colors. Coming upon anemones growing wild in filtered sunshine is breathtaking, but they also make lovely garden plants and cut flowers.

Anemone Blanda

Grecian windflower, is a spring-blooming low grower (to 6 inches) with vivid green ferny foliage and daisy-shaped flowers in blue, white, pink, amethyst or even magenta. Hardy in Zones 4 through 9, Anemone blanda is well suited to naturalizing and will easily spread a carefree carpet of blooms in sheltered spots under trees, around shrubs and rock gardens.

Insider's secret

To give anemones the best possible start in the garden, soak the tubers, which are shriveled and dry and may look dead, overnight in saturated peat moss to rehydrate them. Then plant promptly in full sun or light shade in cool, moist, well-drained fertile soil. Set tubers pointed side up,, 3 to 4 inches deep and 4 inches apart.
