Insider's Secret

Belladonna lilies grow with weedlike abandon in sunny parts of the West in Zones 9-10, and do reasonably well in the garden as far north as Zone 5. Plant the bulbs in late summer or early spring in well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted cow manure, spacing them about a foot apart. In Zones 9-10, cover them with 1 to 2 inches of soil. In Zones 5-8, give them the sunniest possible location and extremely well-drained soil and cover them with about 9 inches of soil. Feed once with a light dusting of 5-10-5 fertilizer when the foliage appears.
