Allamanda

A dozen or so species of twining climbers and shrubs belong to this tropical American genus, a few of them widely planted in warm climates for their colorful trumpet flowers, mostly bright yellow. Glossy leaves are in whorls of 3 to 6 on the smooth stems, which bleed milky sap if cut. The climbing species are among the most popular ornamentals in the tropics, ideal for growing over fences or against walls. They produce a succession of flowers for much of the year. In cooler areas there may be some leaf fall.

Insider's secret

Allamandas do best in at least four hours of direct sunlight a day, night temperatures of 60° to 65° and day temperatures of 70° or higher. Keep the soil moist and fertilize every two weeks from April through September; apply less water and no fertilizer the rest of the year. Propagate from stem cuttings in spring. Generally pest free.
