Also known as Yarrow, Milfoil, or Sneezewort. There are about 85 species of Achillea, most native to Europe and temperate Asia, with a handful in North America. Foliage is fern-like, aromatic and often hairy. Most species bear masses of large, flat heads of tiny daisy flowers form late spring to fall in shades of white, yellow, orange, pink or red. Achilleas are suitable for massed border planting and rockeries, and flowerheads can be dried, retaining their color, for winter decoration. This genus is named after Achilles, who, in Greek mythology, used to plant to heal wounds. |
