Acanthus (Bear's Breeches)

Around 30 species of perennials and shrubs from tropical Africa and Asia as well as Mediterranean Europe make up this genus. The genus name goes back to ancient Greek, and the large and colorful family Acanthaceae (mainly tropical) takes its name from the genus. The deeply lobed and toothed leaves of Acanthus mollis and Acanthus spinous have lent their shape to the carved motifs used to decorate the capitals of Corinthian columns. It is only the more temperate perennial species that have been much cultivated, valued for their erect spikes of bracted curiously shaped flowers, as well as their handsome foliage. The flowers appear in spring and early summer, after which the leaves may die back but sprout again before winter.
